VoicePro®VoicePro® We've Helped Others. Read On.

Human Resources called us about George. His combative work style was causing havoc in his department and was threatening to cut short his otherwise illustrious career. Could VoicePro® help?

When we first spoke with George, he couldn't understand what the problem was. He got things done, didn't he? He was a hard worker, put in more hours than anyone else. So, it was only natural that he was more knowledgeable than the others and that he was always right. Well, almost always right. His co-workers were at fault, not he. They weren't cooperative, wouldn't listen to him, and balked when he told them what to do. His only recourse was to yell at them. That usually did the trick. People backed down and he finally got his way.

When we talked further with George, he admitted that his communication style didn't always work as well as he would like. He felt a deep sense of isolation when his colleagues turned away from him. Many times, the work they turned in had to be done over. This left him wondering if their shoddy efforts might be deliberate. In addition, George's boss had voiced her disapproval, along with the expectation that George would "clean up his act." We taught George to:
  • Recognize the negative impact his aggressive communication style had on other people, to be aware of their resistance, and adjust his behavior accordingly.
  • Temper his drive to get the job done with a more respectful and courteous attitude toward the team.
  • Listen to, acknowledge, and consider the ideas and opinions of others before making decisions.
  • Use group problem-solving methods, and work toward mutually beneficial solutions to problems.
  • Give helpful, constructive feedback that energizes rather than diminishes team spirit, and accept feedback without defensiveness.
  • State his point of view without turning the tables and blaming others.
  • Foster a collaborative spirit within his department.

It took George a while to recognize that his abrasiveness was actually an obstacle to his achieving his personal and professional goals, but once the light dawned, he embraced his new methods of communication. In his own inimitable, action-oriented style, he charged ahead, building good relationships every step along the way.
