So... Why Are You Here?

I have trouble connecting with people

By connection, we mean that bridge of shared understanding that links you with another person. When you connect with someone else, you're in tune-drawn to each other in an unspoken, yet powerful and emotional way.

Connection is the basis of all communication. When you approach the lectern to make a presentation, negotiate a major deal, or walk into a crowded room for the first time, your audience (those around you) will make instantaneous judgments about you. Within a very few seconds, they will decide if they like you, if they trust you, and if what you have to say is worthwhile. And these decisions will be the result of the connection they feel with you at that moment.

Connection is far more than mere eye contact. Connection is predicated on openness. When you connect with someone, you are able-and willing-to look beyond the facade and see who that person really is. Then, you balance that with a willingness to open yourself up to others, warts and all, in ways that may be uncomfortable at first but get easier as you practice them.

Learning to connect is one of the first steps in becoming a great "people person," one who can touch the hearts and minds of others and leave them proud and happy to be associated with you.
